Howard Saltzman, beloved longtime Harker teacher and coach, passes away at 80

Howard Saltzman, a beloved educator, coach and friend, passed away peacefully at his home on March 16, 2026, at the age of 80.

A man of deep character and heart, Howard transitioned to a career in education after an initial start in the insurance industry  a decision that would ultimately impact the lives of countless students and families. He joined the faculty at The Harker School in 1978, where he initially taught all subjects to third and fourth graders. As the curriculum evolved in the 1980s, Howard found his niche as a history specialist.

Beyond the classroom, Howard was a dedicated coach, most notably in baseball and football. He retired in 2009 after 31 years of service, leaving behind a legacy of mentorship. His colleague Sarah Leonard remembered him as a “cheerleader” for his students, noting that he “had a huge heart of gold” and “vividly won the hearts of parents and colleagues alike.”

Howard often expressed how blessed he felt to be part of the Harker community, specifically citing his respect for Howard Nichols and the joy of working alongside dear teammates Betty Koski, Marla Vallone, and Pat Walsh.

He is survived by his devoted wife, Susan; his children, Michael Saltzman ‘94 and Kari (Saltzman) Snell ‘03; and his cherished grandchildren, Kiora, Maddox, Dexter, and Aaron. He is also survived by his siblings, Roberta Otten, Freya Saltzman and Martin Saltzman, and his sister-in-law Sandra Lee and brother-in-law Grady Lee. He was preceded in death by his brother Fred Saltzman.
