Student-organized firefighter benefit raises more than $31,000

Last month, senior Nathan Liu organized the fourth annual Tribute to Fallen Heroes Benefit Concert and Forum. Held at the Community School of Music and Arts in Mountain View, the event featured performances by Harker students and a variety of guest speakers. It raised more than $31,000 toward scholarships for families of California firefighters who died in the line of duty and also supported the Maui Wildfire Relief Fund.

Performers at the event included dancer Juliana Li, grade 11; sophomores Timothy Deng and Jonathan Szeto on piano; and singer Shayla He, grade 12, who performed an original song. The evening included a number of prominent speakers, including Rick Martinez, executive director of the California Fire Foundation, Danielle Harvey, associate vice president of alumni relations at the University of Southern California, and Meena Ghaziasgar, executive director as Case Western Reserve University, who had a conversation with Liu about the impact of youth volunteering.

Liu also took part in a panel discussion with fellow Harker students Selina Xu, grade 12, and Erika Wang, grade 10, who talked about their own experiences in volunteering.
