The annual QxBio conference – where researchers, medical professionals and students met to discuss present and future innovations in life sciences and technology – was hosted at Harker from Sept. 24-26, offering students the unique opportunity to meet with, listen to and present to experts in fields such as data science, biology and oncology.
Brian Yager, head of school, remarked that it was “amazing for a school like Harker to be the location and for us to have these folks doing their conference on our campus, which allowed students and teachers to be inspired by and learn from these people.”
Harker students’ research appeared alongside top researchers from across the world, including graduate students from Stanford, Clemson University and University of Texas. “Having their work taken seriously and valued within this global research community was empowering in its own right,” said Jennifer Gargano, assistant head of school for academic affairs.
Anita Chetty, Harker’s upper school science department chair, noted how students felt after presenting at the event. “They told me afterwards that seeing their poster there, on the same wall as the scientists, changed what they thought was possible for them,” she said. “I might add some of the graduate students were amazed at the caliber of work of our own students.”
