Girls track and field accomplished the unprecedented last week, winning the first WBAL track and field championship in Harker history. The 4×100 team of juniors Maryanne Davies and Sophia Ou and sophomores Christine Deng and Alice Luo set the tone for the meet with a victory and a school record of 50.86 seconds. Samaara Patil, grade 10, won the 800m and placed second in the 400m with a new personal record of 61.18. Luo placed second in the 300m hurdles after running a new personal best in the 100m hurdles. Senior Emily Mitnick continued the best season in Harker thrower history with a new personal best of 32’9” in the shot put for second place to go along with a third-place finish in discus. Ou also became league champion in the long jump and runner-up in the triple jump.
For their part, the boys’ team placed third overall in a competitive field, with several incredibly strong individual performances. In Thursday evening’s pole vault final, junior Brady Tse won the league championship with an 11-foot vault after being pushed to the brink by his own teammate, sophomore Adrian Roufas, who placed second in dramatic fashion after being down to his last attempt twice before setting a new personal record of 10’6”. After that, Tse simply couldn’t stop winning. He took home the title in the 100m hurdles with a league best time of 15 seconds in his debut, with his closest competition being teammate, junior Spencer Chang, who placed second in a new personal record of 15.23. Tse followed up with a blistering 38.99 seconds in the 300m hurdles for his third win. At the end of the meet, he took home three first-place medals, three school records and two top-five performances in CCS this season. While Tse’s performances in new events were exciting novelties, perhaps the most predictable superstar performance belonged to senior Kaleb Goldin, who continued his incredible run of victories at the league level, leaving no doubt as to who is the fastest person in the WBAL over 100m and 200m. Junior Timmy Chen also had a flair for the dramatic, placing second in the triple jump by hitting a personal best of 40’7” on his final attempt of the meet. All told, nine Harker individuals (some in multiple events) and two relay teams qualified for CCS, which will begin Sat., May 24 at Gilroy High School.
For the final day of CCS championships, the swim team posted some of the best performances of the season. MIT-bound senior Kyra Cui finished 14th in the 200 IM and second in the 100 breaststroke, earning a state automatic qualifying time, a season-best and a number 9 seed in that race at states. The girls relay team (frosh Amy Chen, juniors Janam Chahal and Shimeka Sahu and Kyra Cui) climbed up to 15th in the 200 medley and 400 freestyle. The boys relay team (frosh Andrew Woon, sophomore Jaden Ruffy, junior Wenjie Zou and senior Adam Pawliger) climbed up to 14th in the 400 freestyle. Zou defended his 12th place spot in the 200 freestyle, and his 11th-place spot in the 500 freestyle, swimming a season-best time and earning a state consideration time in the 500. Pawliger finished 12th in the 50 freestyle, also earning a state consideration time. Amy Chen managed to climb the ranks and finished 11th in the 100 butterfly, earning a state consideration time.
Frosh golfer Justin Hu tied for second place at the CCS regionals, shooting a 70 at Laguna Seca. His finish qualifies him for the CCS finals today at the same course.
