In NYC, Harker choirs take top spots while ITS students attend workshops

Last month, Harker choral music students performed in New York City at the Worldstrides Heritage Festival, scoring high marks and taking home awards in several categories. Choral groups Capriccio, Festival Chorus and Serenata Concert Choir (comprised of the members of Capriccio and the Harker show choir Downbeat) each received Gold ratings and placed in the top two of their respective divisions. Capriccio was also awarded Outstanding Choir for being the top-scoring group at the festival across all divisions and school sizes. Their combined score was also the highest among all schools at the festival, and their performance earned them a formal invitation to perform at Carnegie Hall. As a standout soloist, senior Wendy Liu was presented with the Maestro award.

Students from the Harker contingent of the International Thespian Society were also on the trip, collaborating with choir students for a performance combining music and poetry at St. John the Divine Cathedral, as well as attending workshops with Broadway performers and technicians. One such workshop was conducted by Christopher Anaya-Gorman, whose credits include “Hadestown” and “Jagged Little Pill.” They also visited NBC Studios for a behind-the-scenes look at the production of shows such as “Saturday Night Live,” “The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon” and “The Kelly Clarkson Show,” and participated in a simulation of the recording a late-night talk show.
