Last week, the annual Cancer Walk brought 500 Harker community members to the middle school field to benefit Camp Okizu, an organization that provides outdoors and camping activities for families of children living with cancer. Per tradition, a large ring of flags containing tributes to loved ones affected by cancer was set up around the field for attendees to encircle during the event, which also included a variety of carnival games, snacks for sale and activities such as karaoke. Funds generated from the sales of tickets, food and items such as t-shirts will be donated to Camp Okizu. The Cancer Walk was started in 2007 by former Harker computer science teacher Michael Schmidt, whose mother died of cancer in 2006.
